Washington Pike/Route 50 Intersection Project Complete
6/5/2023
BRIDGEVILLE — Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today issued the following statement marking the completion of the Washington Pike/Route 50 project:

“First, I want to thank every member of the task force for this project – from officials with Bridgeville Borough and South Fayette Township to employees of PennDOT District 11, especially PennDOT District 11 Executive Cheryl Moon-Sirianni, and finally Sen. Devlin Robinson. Your work with me to accomplish this monumental project will undoubtedly have a positive impact on Bridgeville and South Fayette for decades to come. I’d like to extend my gratitude to all the council members, township commissioners, both current and past, and to all of Bridgeville and South Fayette Township residents, as each municipality contributed funds to this project.

“Most importantly, thank you to the local residents. I know this area has been struggling with traffic congestion for years due to growth. There were times when people may have thought this project was dead or would never end, but I appreciate everyone’s patience in getting this project completed, especially down the final stretch with the three weekend closures this year.”

Over the past 10 years, the Washington Pike/Route 50 bridge project went from concept to construction to completion. Initially, the project was started in 2014 by then Sen. Matt Smith with Bridgeville Borough, South Fayette Township and PennDOT. Once taking office in 2015, this project became a top priority of Ortitay’s. After Ortitay spent years helping each municipality acquire grants and working with the task force, the project was fully funded in 2020. Due to supply chain issues and delays from the COVID-19 pandemic, work officially started last year. This more than $15 million project has had many challenges along the way, including right-of-way acquisitions, moving of multiple utilities, keeping the creek undisturbed and bridge construction.

This project consisted of widening the bridge over Chartiers Creek to seven lanes, added an exclusive turning lane from southbound Washington Pike to northbound I-79, additional widening work on the I-79 ramp and the widening of Chartiers Creek to include a turning lane.

The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.
