Ortitay Appointed to Three Committees
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) announced he has been assigned to the Education, Environmental Resources and Energy, and Transportation committees for the 2023-24 Legislative Session.
As part of his service on these committees, he was named Republican chairman of the Subcommittee on Highways and Bridges under the Transportation Committee and Republican chairman of the Subcommittee for Special Education under the Education Committee.
“I’m pleased to have been reappointed to the Education and Environmental Resources committees and to be adding the Transportation Committee to my assignments,” Ortitay said. “We need to change how we educate our children and move to a student-centered approach that recognizes one size doesn’t fit all. In light of the education Commonwealth Court decision earlier this year, we have an opportunity to transform our schools into a system that will help students be successful in building their skills, knowledge, and the give them the ability to explore different career paths. I’m also eager to work on transportation issues plaguing our Commonwealth. Last session, I fought to stop a disastrous tolling plan proposed by PennDOT, which would have especially burdened our area with a toll on I-79. It’s time to have a serious discussion about how we fund our roads and bridges and develop real solutions.”
The Education Committee works on state issues involving public and private schools, encompassing pre-K through grade 12 basic education, as well as post-secondary education.
The Environmental Resources and Energy Committee has legislative oversight of more than 45 different environmental and energy-related laws, while the Gaming Oversight Committee oversees legislation dealing with slot machines and table games, as well as the state’s bingo, small games of chance and amusement laws.
The House Transportation Committee is responsible for reviewing vehicle code regulations, mandatory insurance and coverage minimums, rules of the road, parking and local enforcements, mass transit codes, rail issues, PennDOT planning, oversight of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, airports, scenic highways and highway naming.
The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.
